The Inner Critic: the voice that comments on everything

« You could have done better. You said too much. You are not up to it. » Do you recognise that voice? It has been talking to you for years — and you have probably never had a real conversation with it.

Portrait

The Inner Critic is probably the best known of our inner voices — Hal and Sidra Stone devoted a whole book to it. It comments, compares, anticipates the judgement of others. It often speaks with the vocabulary of a demanding parent, a teacher, a former boss. Its favourite moment: just after a meeting, just before falling asleep.

What it protects

Here is the surprise: the Critic does not want to destroy you. It appeared, often very early, to protect you — from rejection, shame, others' criticism. Its logic: « if I say it first, and harder, no one can hurt you. » An exhausting bodyguard, but a bodyguard nonetheless. As long as we fight it or believe it blindly, it only speaks louder.

And in Voice Dialogue?

In a session, the facilitator invites the Critic to speak — from its own chair. Not to silence it, not to prove it right: to get to know it. When was it born? Whom does it protect? What does it fear if it stops? People are often moved by what they discover. And something shifts: the Critic becomes a voice among others — no longer the voice of truth. That is the beginning of choice.
